Technology has had a huge impact on my life. As a music major almost all of my time is spent in the music building making technology my only real connection to the outside world. As a musician I use technology to find sheet music, transpose accompanying pieces, record sight singing quizzes and occasionally as a metronome. In many ways, I believe I could do without it, however this is the way the world shares information. Also, it's a very convenient and increasingly more available tool. 2-3 years ago I blindly accepted and played whatever pieces my teacher gave me whether in piano lessons or to perform in chorus. Moving up to last year technology became more present with my AP Theory class's MacGamut work and looking up college music audition repertoire. I had no idea that one little disc and a start-up file could be so infuriating and helpful at the same time. Seems like every day here I find myself looking up music on websites to analyze or dictate for fun. Things change just as technology does. I look forward to the ways in which I will incorporate technology into my future classroom. When I look back on it, the assignments from this semester seem to be so much more applicable than 107's. My random choral nerd conversations regarding awesome new pieces have also increased exponentially. This is probably because I'm now surrounded by other chorus freaks, but also that I have become more efficient in using the available tools to seek out new music and composers. Without technology everything from the way I communicate with friends to my academic life would be completely different. I can't even begin to imagine how much MORE time I would spend in the library or how much all of those printed-out hard-copy papers would cost. As much as I love the smell of a new book (or a really old one, for that matter), I look forward to what new inventions are just around the corner. Surely they will effect us in ways we never could have imagined, the possibilities are endless.
